STUNNING CLASS VICTORY AT LE MANS 24 HOURS


1-2 victory for Nissan-powered LMP2 cars
Greaves Motorsport take the class win with Tom Kimber-Smith, Karim Ojjeh and Olivier Lombard
Nissan’s gamer-turned-racer Lucas Ordonez takes podium finish on Le Mans debut
Nissan-powered cars have finished in first and second place in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours. Olivier Lombard took the chequered flag as LMP2 winner in the Zytek Nissan of Greaves Motorsport. In second place was the Oreca 03 Nissan of the Signatech Nissan team of Lucas Ordonez, Franck Mailleux and Soheil Ayari.

The drama-filled 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours will be remembered as the race that beat some of the best with many top drivers and manufacturers failing to finish. It will also be remembered as the race where Nissan’s Lucas Ordonez went from winning a competition just three years ago to taking a podium position at the toughest race in the world!

“This is the best feeling I have ever had,” said a very emotional Ordonez after the race. “The team is amazing. We had a few problems but they managed it perfectly and now we are on the podium at Le Mans! There was a second when I thought it was all over and that was a difficult moment but we recovered and made it to second place. This is going to take some time to sink in!”

For Tim Greaves of Greaves Motorsport it has been a nerve-wracking 24 hours: “That was the longest day of my life,” he said. “I asked someone how many seconds are in six hours as I needed to start a count down! It has been an incredible race for us, as aside from one tiny mechanical problem we didn’t have a single problem that required a long stop in the garage. The drivers all did an amazing job and now we can celebrate!”

The final hours of the race provided plenty of drama with the Signatech Nissan car, in the hands of Franck Mailleux, suffering from its second puncture with three hours to go and then soon after that Tom Kimber-Smith had an off into the gravel in the Greaves car when it began to rain.

“The on-off rain made it pretty tricky,” said Tom. “I went out with a dark vizor so I couldn’t see the clouds coming and then going into turn one I locked the rears and spun into the gravel. Fortunately we had such a strong lead so I was able to pit for intermediate tyres and not lose position. We stuck to our own game plan; we knew that if we went steady we would be up there at the end of the race.”

Après avoir terminé cinquième l’an dernier sous le nom de Team Bruichladdich, Greaves Motorsport s'impose cette année avec au volant Karim Ojjeh, Tom Kimber-Smith (déjà vainqueur de la catégorie LM GT2 aux 24 Heures 2006) et Olivier Lombard, un débutant déjà très prometteur.

Karim Ojjeh : « Que puis-je faire de mieux, à part prendre ma retraite (rires) ? J’avais deux nouveaux coéquipiers cette année en la personne de Tom Kimber-Smith et Olivier Lombard, et tout s’est magnifiquement passé. Tom nous encourage beaucoup, et Olivier est également très bien. C’est un magnifique cadeau, et une énorme source de motivation pour terminer la saison Le Mans Series, où nous avons déjà gagné une course cette année, et il faut désormais nous concentrer sur les trois restantes. »

Tom Kimber-Smith : « L’objectif, c’était de rester en dehors des problèmes. Quand on voit les deux accidents des Audi, ça aurait très bien pu nous arriver aussi. Nous avons respecté notre stratégie, parce qu’en LM P2 il faut d’abord terminer, et pas forcément faire un chrono rapide à chaque tour. Conduire au Mans avec un constructeur serait une grande expérience. »

Olivier Lombard : « Je me rends compte que remporter cette victoire est quelque chose d’exceptionnel. J’ai essayé la voiture pour la première fois il y a une semaine. Mon objectif était de ne pas faire de faute et d’avoir un bon rythme. Même s’il y a la fatigue et le stress, j’ai su gérer la situation et je suis vraiment très heureux. »

Tim Greaves (propriétaire Greaves Motorsport) : « Olivier a tout simplement été fantastique. Cette décision a été prise à la dernière minute. Il est venu faire un test en Angleterre, à Rockingham, et il n’a fait qu’une quinzaine de tours avant de débarquer au Mans. Il est vraiment très mûr, il s’entend très bien avec Tom, et aussi avec Karim. A vrai dire, j’étais un peu inquiet à propos de Tom, car il est beaucoup plus difficile de gagner deux fois qu’une seule. Mais on m’avait dit qu’il était très solide, et depuis qu’il nous a rejoints, nous avons tout de même gagné au Castellet, et aujourd’hui au Mans ! »

I motori Nissan andavano come scuregge.

Hanno fatto 1° e 2° in Lmp2, va detto però per onore di cronaca che la categoria era poco competitiva con molti gentleman in pista.

Comunque le barchette motorizzate Nissan sono sempre state le più veloci.
